For 8 of the best summers of my life ('88-'95), I was involved with the YMCA's Camp Becket-in-the-Berkshires. I was a camper for 5 years before doing leadership training programs, such as a 6-week trip to South America, in such countries as

Brazil
Argentina
Paraguay
Uruguay

(Thanks to my former roommate, Matthew, for finally finding the flags for me!), and a 5-week service project on the Sioux Reservations of South Dakota. In the summer of '95, I worked at Camp Becket as a counselor-in-training. I took a year off from Becket in '96 and worked at a local restaurant to earn money for college, which also gave me more free time for concerts, although bussing tables wasn't nearly as exciting as being a camp counselor!

I had planned on spending this past summer living in Boston with my now ex-girlfriend, but that fell through, so then I was going to live on Cape Cod with my friend and current apartmentmate Ron, but that fell through as well. I did manage to work for the Outdoor Center at Becket for 6 weeks at the beginning of the summer, which was fantastic! For the next 6 weeks, I did a lot of travelling, going to festivals and other shows (including a nice trek down to Virginia Beach for the first US Phish show of the summer), and just bummed around. The rest of my summer consisted of spending some time with my family in Maine, followed by The Great Went, followed by one week of employment at the Tzafon USY Encampment at Camp Ramah in Palmer, MA. Then I came back to school, moved into my apartment, and bought a car, a 1970 Volkswagen Bus, which I hope to have on the road again soon... it suffered some painful blows over spring break. I would also like to scan some pictures from my summer and put them up here for all to see, but I haven't gotten around to it yet.

This summer (1998), I will be spending 5-6 weeks at the Edgar Stanton Audio Recording Institute, part of the Aspen Music School in Aspen, CO, learning a lot of techy stuff about recording live music. Part of the curriculum includes recording the performances during the festival. Recording live shows is probably how I'd spend a large part of my summer anyway, so why not shell out a couple thousand bucks to do it in Aspen, right? =) I also plan to return to Camp Becket to work for the Outdoor Center in the spring (before Aspen), then return to Charlottesville in mid-July and make some dough (literally and figuratively) at Chesapeake Bagel Bakery.
